by Alan Micklethwaite

‘Welsh Poppy’ is a piece of sculpture is from a series by Alan Micklethwaite currently on display as part of the exhibition ‘Between Worlds’, in the North Transept of St Albans Cathedral.

The series comprises eight small scale polychromed terracotta busts mounted on sandstone plinths. They explore the ancient and deeply felt connection between nature and the human spirit, the headdress being a motif to imply attributes of this spiritual connection. The sculpture draws on influences which include English medieval imagery, Mayan and Aztec terracotta sculpture and central African and Ancient Egyptian sculpture.
