ALAN MICKLETHWAITE

Alan has been a practising stone carver for over thirty years, and has established his reputation as one of the country’s finest restoration carvers. As well as having a Master’s Degree in Fine Art and a conservation diploma, he served an apprenticeship as a stone carver at Lincoln Cathedral, eventually becoming their head carver.

For more than a decade he has practised as a freelance sculptor and stone carver, working on contemporary sculpture commissions as well as continuing to use his widely acknowledged expertise and wealth of experience in the restoration of buildings and ancient monuments. His diverse portfolio, featuring both contemporary and traditional figurative work, demonstrates an intuitive understanding of materials and techniques.

Alan’s teaching experience is well established; as well as the many years he has spent teaching stone carving to apprentices, he has spent time as a university lecturer, teaching both stone carving and architectural conservation and has taught countless workshops and classes to both beginners and more experienced craftspeople.

In 2013, his book ‘Restoration Stone Carving’ was published, which has come to be regarded as a definitive work on the subject.
